oxidised chunky silver brooch by Helen Shere

A unique handcrafted 'two walls' brooch inspired by the textures and patterns of old stone and brick buildings in York. Made from solid sterling silver and 24ct gold foil.

Each element has been hand cut and textured from sheet sterling silver and soldered together to create this illustrative and tactile brooch. Made with a strong steel pin. The brooch measures approx 5cm x 3.5cm x 0.5cm.

York is my home town and it is old. Very old. Within 20 mins of walking you can see bricks from the original Roman walls, past the ruins of a Benedictine monastry, a tudor lodge, Georgian grandeur, a stunning Victorian railway station and a brutalist edifice currently housing a Malmaison hotel - with excellent views of the Minster from the rooftop bar.

These textures and patterns provide endless inspiration and I notice something new every time I set foot in York. This has fed into my work as I explore ways to express what what I love via the jewellery I make.
